Receding gums is a condition in which the gums expose the root surfaces of teeth. Gum recession leads to the formation of gaps or pockets between the teeth and gum line.

Receding gums, or gingival recession as it is medically known, is a condition in which the gums pull back from the tooth surface and expose the roots of the teeth.

What Causes Receding Gums?
According to many studies, gum recession can occur in people with both good and poor oral hygiene. This means that there are two types of gum recession, one of which can be related to anatomical factors and other to physiological or pathological factors.
Although it is a problem that affects a great number of people, most people don’t know they have gum recession until it is progressed. Tooth sensitivity is the first sign.
However, the most common sign is a notch that is felt near the gum line. Periodontal disease is one of the main factors that cause receding gums.
Another cause of gum recession is heredity. It has been scientifically shown that 30% of the population may experience gum diseases, regardless of their current oral health. In women, hormonal changes and fluctuations, particularly during puberty and pregnancy, can make gums prone to recession.
Aggressive tooth brushing can also cause receding gums. Improper oral care causes plaque to build up into tartar and lead to gum recession.
Grinding or clenching of the teeth causes excess force exerted on the teeth and leads to receding gums. Other factors that can cause receding gums include the use of tobacco products or lip or tongue piercings.
How Do You Know You Have Receding Gums?
This problem is characterized by various symptoms and the most common is the shift of the gum tissue which leads to exposure of the yellow dentin.
Other symptoms include stained teeth, yellow appearance of roots, sensitivity, long teeth, stained teeth, spaces between teeth, food packing between teeth and susceptibility to decay.
The good news is that people are finally becoming aware of the effectiveness of the natural remedies. They are inexpensive, available and completely safe to use.
For that purpose, we have some natural and effective methods will treat receding gums:
1. Green Tea
Free radicals in the mouth cause periodontal disease, which eventually leads to receding gums. Green tea contains catechins, potent antioxidants that can fight periodontal disease.
They can also strengthen the bond between the teeth and gums. This tea offers powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce the swelling of gums that interfere with the proper healing of the gums and oral diseases.
You should drink 1 cup of green tea every day, in the morning.
2. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera has the ability to reduce the inflammation of gums and activate the cells essential for repairing the tissues. It has antibacterial properties that keep your mouth free of infections.
Also, this herb offers anti-inflammatory and cell-repairing properties. In addition, Aloe Vera can encourage soft tissue organization. So, it does not come as a surprise why it is so effective in the case of gum recession.
You can use Aloe Vera gel for brushing. Just add some water to the gel and use this as a mouthwash every day.
3. Oil Pulling
Oil pulling is one of the best traditional methods for treating dental diseases. It has been shown that it can help reverse gum recession. Oils like virgin coconut oil and sesame oil offer a protective coating to the teeth, which in turn prevents plaque build-up.
Sesame oil removes toxins from the mouth while coconut oil keeps your mouth free of infections. Oil pulling with coconut oil will prevent tooth decay and heal cavities.
Swish a teaspoon of virgin coconut or sesame oil in your mouth. In the beginning, you should do oil pulling for half to 1 minute. Then, gradually increase the time up to 15-20 minutes at a time. Rinse your mouth with warm saline water.
4. Eucalyptus Oil
Eucalyptus oil can effectively prevent oral diseases that can result in gum recession. This oil offers strong anti-inflammatory properties and has the ability to reduce the swelling in the gums.
To cure and prevent gum recession and stimulate the growth of new gum tissue, massage the gums with eucalyptus oil. However, make sure to dilute the oil because eucalyptus oil can be strong for the soft gums tissues.
You should add 1–2 drops of eucalyptus oil to 1–2 tablespoons of water and mix well. Dip your toothbrush or your fingers in it and massage your gums gently for several minutes. Rinse with water afterwards.
For many years, myrrh has been used for treating gum and oral diseases. It has the ability to prevent gum recession and prevent gum damage. Many studies claim that myrrh offers potent anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
Crush the myrrh to get a powder. Add some water and mix well until you get a paste. Use this paste to massage your gums for several minutes. You can use a toothbrush. Wash off with water.
6. Clove Oil
Clove oil is known for its astonishing disinfectant properties and its ability to treat various oral diseases. It is particularly effective for treating toothaches.
Clove oil has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can fight periodontal diseases and many other dental problems.
You should chew a clove after your meal. It is very important that the oil reaches all the areas of your mouth during chewing.
Apply 1–2 drops of clove oil to your gums and massage for several minutes. You should repeat this procedure 3 times a day, after your meals.
Note: If you use blood clotting medication, make sure to consult a doctor before using the oil.
DIY Mouthwash For Receding Gums
The regular use of mouthwash will prevent germs and bacteria and eventually stop gum recession. However, the mouthwashes found on the market are harmful.
So, we recommend making your own natural mouthwash. If you use herbs, you should heat to activate their beneficial properties. However, if you use oil extracts or non-herbal ingredients, you should only mix the ingredients.
Making a mouthwash includes 3 basic methods:
Bring water to a boil. Add herbs to it and infuse for 20 minutes. Strain the water and let it cool.
Take a bottle, add the herbs into it then add the boiling water. Let it stand overnight. Then, make sure to strain. Also, you can steep the ingredients for 1 week, but you should shake them well every day, and then strain and use it.
If you’re using essential oils and extracts, this method is the best for you. Just put the ingredients in a bottle, add water, and shake well.

Clove oil is extremely effective for relieving toothaches. Due to its antioxidant and antiseptic properties, it can reduce infections in the teeth.
- 2 cups of water
- 2 tsp of dried rosemary or 4 rosemary sprigs
- 4 cloves
Mix the ingredients and boil or steep the solution. Use this mouthwash every day.
Tea Tree Oil Mouthwash
When used topically, tea tree oil has various medicinal properties, including antiviral, antiseptic, antifungal, and antibacterial. This recipe includes the use of myrrh and stevia.
Due to its antiseptic properties, myrrh is used in mouthwashes, gargles and toothpaste to prevent and treat gum diseases. Stevia can prevent the growth and reproduction of dangerous bacteria responsible for gum disease and tooth decay.
- 1 cup of water
- 2 tsp of baking soda
- 1/2 tsp of myrrh tincture
- 4 drops of tea tree oil
- 4 drops of an essential oil of your choice (cinnamon, peppermint, lemon)
- 1/8 tsp stevia
Just mix all the ingredients and use this mouthwash daily.
Mint And Honey Mouthwash
Mint is known for its powerful antioxidant and antifungal properties. Honey, on the other hand, contains more complex carbohydrates that break down slowly and do not cause problems in the mouth.
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp raw honey
- 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
- 2 drops of peppermint essential oil
- 2 drops of spearmint essential oil
- 1 drop of anise seed oil
Just mix the ingredients and use this mouthwash on a daily basis.
Baking Soda Mouthwash
Baking soda acts as a natural cleanser for your teeth and gums. It can neutralize the production of acid in the mouth. Due to its antiseptic properties, baking soda can prevent infections.
- 1 cup of water
- 1 tsp of baking soda
- 4 drops of tea tree oil
Just mix all the ingredients. Use this mouthwash every day.
Note: Before using, make sure to shake the mouthwash well. Instead of tap water, you can use distilled, filtered or mineral water.
